In order to spin these pear-shaped tops, you wind the top with a string and throw it. I always call them "throw tops" because of this. This is my favorite type of top, hence the choice for my tattoo, because it takes practice and determination to spin one. Also, there are a number of tricks to learn. I prefer the classic wooden peg tops like those from The Toycrafter.
